Today, the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) joins the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) in celebrating World Press Freedom Day, and we commend all media owners, staff and working journalists who continue to ensure public awareness and government transparency; both of which are crucial components of a thriving democracy.

JARIA Representatives Meet With MAJ Executives PDF Print E-mail

Representatives of the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA) paid the MAJ Executives a visit on April 10, 2012.  They were Charles Campbell (Executive Director, JARIA), Michael “Ibo” Cooper (Chairman, JARIA), Ewan Simpson (President, CALM), Colleen Douglas (Marketing Director, JARIA) and Steve Golding (JACAP).

Many issues were put on the table, such as submission of playlists, announcing artistes of respective songs being played, royalty fees.  Also, MAJ and JARIA decided to put heads together to find ways of fighting against Payola.

The Jamaica Debates Commission conducted the National Political debates between the two major Parties, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and People’s National Party (PNP), in December 2011.  The Socio-Economic team debate was held on December 10 at the studios of the Creative Production & Training Centre (CPTC).  Participants were Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Senator Warren Newby; Member of Parliament, Dr. Saphire Longmore and Member of Parliament Senator Marlene Malahoo-Forte for team JLP.  Representing PNP were Spokesperson for Culture, Youth and Sports, Lisa Hanna; Member of Parliament, Dr. Dayton  Campbell and Member of Parliament, Raymond Pryce.  On December 15, the Economic & Financial debate was held also at the CPTC studios between Minister of Finance, Hon. Audley Shaw representing JLP and Spokesman for Finance, Dr. Peter Phillips for PNP.  The Leadership debate (townhall style) between Leader of the Opposition Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller and Prime Minister Hon. Andrew Holness was held at the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, on December 20.

MAJ Executives Meet With Hon. Mark Golding, Minister of Justice PDF Print E-mail

On March 13, 2012 the MAJ invited the Minister of Justice to a meeting to discuss the status of the Review of Jamaica’s Defamation Act.

Other guests in attendance were Peter Wilson, Legal Director, Ministry of Justice; Justice Hugh Small; Roxanne Watson, Media Law Specialist, University of Florida; J. Khara East, Legal Officer, Jamaica Observer and Stephen Greig, Legal Officer/Company Secretary, RJR Group.
