National Leadership Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee:

The Organizing Committee updated the Heads of Media on agenda for the National Leadership Prayer Breakfast being held on January 16, 2014.  They were encouraged to try and reach out to citizens in the rural areas for a cross-island National Prayer Service.  They solicited partnership and concluded with a prayer for the media.

The Police Commissioner updated the Heads of Media on the progress of the new Anti-Gang Legislation.  He also discussed the status of crime and gangs in the country.  The Commissioner solicited the media's assistance with public awareness on JCF’s transformation programme which included polygraph testing, vetting the police force, advanced training systems, reformed management systems and annual strategic plan reports from all police stations.  The Heads of Media urged the JCF to work along with Crime Stop in their efforts to fight crime.

JACAP mentioned that the Heads of Agreement had expired years ago and they intended to establish a new one effective January 2014.  Rates will now be calculated using international standards which will also determine whether a station is considered a talk station or a music station.  MAJ suggested that it should be noted that music being played in the nights attracted less commercials and listenership.

Mr. Zacca advised that representatives from civil society, trade unions, private sector and government met and produced a report outlining the conditions needed to sustain the development of the country through a successful social partnership.

Dr. Elizabeth Ward, Chairperson, Violence Prevention Alliance

Dr. Ward advised that Jamaica had the third highest homicide rate in the world.  Her concerns included communication and data regarding violence and gangs.
