Threat Against Media Houses PDF Print E-mail

The Media Association Jamaica Limited notes with serious concern reports by the police of intelligence information that threats have been made to destabilize two media houses, the Gleaner Company and the RJR Communications Group.

The report is particularly worrying as the alleged threats were supposedly sparked by news organisations reporting on issues of interest to the public – a function which is expected of media houses.

The MAJ joins the PAJ in deploring any such threat that may exist and calls on law abiding Jamaicans to support media houses in ensuring that a free and responsible media is encouraged and protected in our country.

We cannot allow the freedom to speak, the people’s right to be informed and the media’s role to report the news around us to be sacrificed in any way”, the MAJ statement said.

The Media Association is further calling on both major political parties to take serious and credible collaborative steps to help all Jamaica stem the tide of intimidation and violence pervading the country.  Media have consistently reported on various issues on a daily basis and must continue to do so in the interest of the wider public.  Jamaica’s media freedom must be cherished and not become the next issue of shame that profiles us internationally.
